GRAND PRIZE Masculine and understated, this store depends on strong vertical lines and bold lighting choices to bring character to its unusual footprint and to distinguish its products from those of competitors. Marble and teak flooring sets off fixtures made of wood veneer and grooved, broken limestone, which stand out like oases from the display walls. Ringed with jewelry-like display cases built into the wood-lined walls, the store’s gold-toned lighting invites customers in to explore its luxury products in a style that implies shared expertise and enjoyment of the finer things. Separate, climate-controlled wine and cigar rooms demonstrate the product expertise.

DFS Wine & Cigars: A Focus on perimeter walls turned the challenge of high wall and unusual store configuration into an opportunity. Instead of attempting to disguise the walls, the vertical wooden shelving that lines the store emphasizes their height, giving the display panels additional gravity and elegance. Spears of white acrylic lighting at random intervals further draws attention to the wall height and the irregular, wooden-sheathed ceiling. Backlit photos and recessed shelves lit like jewelry displays further draw the eye from the mall courtyard all the way to the back of the store.

individual element award: lighting With a design focused on the walls, lighting plays a vital part in directing customers, setting a tone, and reinforcing the high-end nature of the product. A golden hue for sign and shelf lighting speaks of elegance, while pools to clear light on display tables and hanging “shards” of acrylic display single bottles of wine and provide visual interest. Backlit photos give character to the display of similar-looking wine bottles. The combination of recessed, spot, under-shelf, and edge lighting and illuminated signage creates pleasing harmony without detracting from the products.
