DFS is a retailer that offers duty-free luxury brands such as Fendi, Bally Cartier, Hermes and Dior to the traveling public. The company operates shops at airports and in downtown locations in cities such as Hong Kong, Auckland, Bali and Singapore. Laws regarding duty-free goods varies from country to country, but generally customers must depart the country before consuming the goods.
The DFS shown here-and designed by rkd retail/iQ is located in the Abu Dhabi International Airport and is a complete, yet scaled-down version of a DFS Galleria that would be found in a downtown area. Located in Terminal 3, between check-in/ security and the departure concourse and gates, all travelers are funneled through the shops two main corridors. Along one corridor is a boutique hall in which 10 top global brands have implemented their own shop concepts. The other corridor presents multiple brands in a shop-in-shop implementation. Both corridors lead to an open, two-level space with offerings of luxury goods such as cosmetics, perfumes, watches, gold and liquor. On the upper level travelers can buy snacks, food and beverages. The designers looked to the region’s heritage for inspiration, providing a sense of place to the shops and a contextual link to the area. Materials were crafted to entrance the sense of luxury inherent in the high-end brands. |
